I normally do not write on this blog, as the images speak for themselves. Plus, noone wants to read, people like to glance. So there you go. But I just got to thinking... I went to Haiti in 1993 with my church. We visited and worked with local churches there in Port au Prince... we went and saw a newly built school in a mountain village... We toured City Soleil, Port au Prince's largest slum... We held special needs babies in an orphanage (I think that single day affected me more than any other in my life)....
We all are aware, I'm sure, of the politics and history of the country that makes this earthquake the disaster that it is. 63 people were killed in the SF earthquake of the same magnitude...Enough said. So, I have friends who have grown up there, who have friends and even a brother there... and this whole thing still seems so removed from the life I live now. I'm not sure that is a good thing. It is what it is.
Anyhow, I made a woodcut in high school of a young Haitian boy whose family we worshipped with at a Sunday service. It made it into "Festival, " a yearly art show and celebration in Grand Rapids. My first show. It now hangs in the permanent collection at my high school.
I have 2 prints left. For sale with the proceeds going to CRWRC for direct aid in Haiti. Please contact me if interested-- carinlilly@hotmail.com or my cell
